Neil was an assistant professor in the chemical engineering department at Tulane University before returning to the University of Missouri-Rolla, now the Missouri University for Science and Technology, in 1978. He was promoted to associate professor in 1982 and became an associate professor emeritus upon retirement in 2012. Neil took a sabbatical leave at the Florida A&M/Florida State University College of Engineering in 1987-1988.
Neil supervised more than 40 undergraduate, MS, and PhD research projects that led to more than 100 publications and presentations. He was the lead investigator for the research project of the Process Data Exchange Institute, a consortium of 35 companies created by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) to establish international standards for the electronic exchange of chemical process engineering data. Neil was a research investigator in the Intelligent Systems Center, a research associate in the Center for Environmental Science and Technology, and the director of the Consortium for Advanced Process and Control Engineering Technologies. He was an investigator on 21 research grants with a total of more than $675,000 in funding.
Neil served the chemical engineering profession as a program reviewer for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, as a reviewer of research proposals and journal articles, and as a member of the Membership, National Program, and Student Chapters Committees of AIChE. He was the 2nd Vice Chair, 1st Vice Chair, and Chair of the Student Chapters Committee and currently serves as a trustee of the AIChE Foundation. He has served as a consultant to six companies.
