Academy Purpose

The Academy of Chemical Engineers at the Missouri University of Science and Technology was formally established on October 3, 1996. The mission of the Academy is to recognize MSM/UMR/MST chemical engineering graduates who have provided outstanding leadership, attained significant levels of professional achievement and success, and demonstrated high standards of personal and professional integrity. The Academy is to be an active organization to provide advisory guidance and counsel to the chair, faculty and students of chemical & biochemical engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The Academy members strengthen the dedication and understanding of students of chemical engineering through personal and professional example. Finally, the Academy is to partner with the chemical and biochemical engineering department to develop, advance and sponsor key programs of both the Academy and the Department by identifying, securing, and providing financial support. Membership in the Academy is by invitation only.

Each year a meeting is held on campus in April and as desired/needed a virtual meeting in the Fall. Academy members are expected to attend the April meeting in person unless physically unable to do so. Members who are not able to attend should send their regrets to the Tonya Lane at tonya.lane@mst.edu or mail to

Chemical and Biochemical Dept, Attn Tonya Lane James E. Bertelsmeyer Hall 1101 N State St. Rolla, Mo. 65409

  1. Each member will be asked to participate on a committee of their choosing, with the majority of committee work being done virtually.

Current Academy Committees are:

  1. Membership
  2. Finance
  3. Student Design Teams Advisory Committee
  4. Membership Engagement Committee
  5. Distinguished Lectureship Committee (preference for active faculty members at any educational institution)

Note that other study teams or committees may be constituted by the Academy Board of Directors as appropriate and as needed.

Two other committees are organized independently of the Academy but share the common objective to support the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering department with the Academy.  Academy members may indicate their interest to participate in these committees as well:

  •  Industrial Advisory Committee
  •  Student Mentoring Committee

  • Members are encouraged to support the department financially, typically through an annual campaign. Suggested amount may vary but nominally $1000/year. Your contribution currently supports Academy Lecturer/Dinner, Student Graders, Faculty Development as well as student design groups – ChemE Car, ChemE Cube, and IGEM.

  • Participate in reviewing and voting on potential Academy members annually by ballot.
