John earned a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology in 1974 and began his career as a process engineer with Conoco in Ponca City, OK. He transferred after two years to the instrumentation design group, moved to Houston in 1995 and retired in 2012 as a Principal Engineer, Instrumentation and Control Systems for the company.

John has been a member of ISA, the International Society of Automation, for over 41 years. He has held a variety of leadership positions on the Section, District, Division, and Society levels. John was a voting member of two ISA standards committees and seven standards working groups. He was the Vice President of the Industries and Sciences Department. He received the Distinguished Society Service Award from ISA in 2008 and the ISA Standards and Practices Department Award in 2009 as a technical editor in the development of the ISA standard for alarm management.

John has been a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Oklahoma since 1979. He was a Certified Automation Professional and was PRISM-certified for safety instrumented systems.

John was a volunteer with the Houston SPCA, an associate producer for the annual Houston SPCA telethon for more than five years and was honored as the Houston SPCA Special Event Volunteer of the Year in 2004. John is a volunteer with the Houston Zoo, a Keeper Aid in the Aquarium and received the Volunteer of the Year award in 2020. He also teaches a beginning computer course for seniors at the local senior center.

John and his wife of over 40 years, Sharon, are the proud parents of three rescued animals: their cat, Maddie; an American Eskimo, Mikki; and a German Shepherd, Remi
