Kim Colter's graduate research on glow discharge polymerization membranes for drug delivery devices at Berkeley led to the pursuit of a career in medicine. He graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri in 1978 and did an internship and residency in family practice at the University of Missouri Hospitals and Clinics.

Kim is currently one of three founding partners of Family Health Care, a primary care medical practice of 14 doctors in five east central Missouri communities. Kim and his wife Elaine Menke, a BS Computer Science UMR graduate of 1973, have been members of OGS since 1987. They also support the Robert Nicodemus Scholar Athlete Award, a scholarship named to honor Bob Nicodemus, BS Mechanical Engineering 1969, who was a tremendous inspiration to Kim as a UMR freshman. Dr. Colter has associate faculty appointments at UMC School of Medicine, UMKC School of Medicine and Washington University School of Medicine.

He was elected to the UMR athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 where he "stands in the shadows of giants, as perplexed and honored by his inclusion there as he is by the august company in the Academy of Chemical Engineers". Despite making a living as a doctor, he says he still thinks like an engineer. Kim and Elaine reside in Washington, Missouri. Kim was inducted into the Academy in 1999.
