Orrin taught as an Instructor in Chemical Engineering at UMC during 1952 while anticipating his responsibilities to the U.S. Air Force, moving to Rice in the Fall of 1952. Upon finishing his degree in June 1955, he went to the University of Oklahoma to teach until 1966, which included a sabbatical leave with the Institute du Genie Chimique, Toulouse, France, 1961-62. He came to the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1966 until his retirement in 1994, with sabbatical leaves in 1976 (Oxford University, Oxford, England), 1982 [Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland], and 1989 [Technical University of Munich (TUM), Munich, Germany]. Orrin was a consultant with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Rolla Research Center, held summer positions with B.F. Goodrich Corp. and Esso Production Research, and consulted privately. He has been active with professional societies such as AIChE, ACS, ASEE, AAUP, AXE, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, NSPE-MSPE, and is a registered professional engineer in Missouri. He is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla and is involved with research in the transport phenomena and separations encountered in biotechnological systems. Orrin and his wife Alice reside in Rolla, Missouri. Orrin was inducted into the Academy in 1999.
