In 1960, Joe joined Corn Products Company as a Process Engineer, where he worked on two startup teams. During 1963 to 1965, he and his wife worked with Extension Volunteers and managed an orphanage in Bethany, Oklahoma, where they directed a staff of twelve and cared for 55 children. Joe began his career with Wyandotte Chemicals (now BASF Corporation) in 1965 as a Development Engineer. Joe has held many positions at BASF such as Process Systems Engineer, Director of Inorganic R&D, and Director of Chemical Engineering. His last position with BASF (prior to retiring) was Director of Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, where he directed the activities of analytical chemistry, scale-up, and small-scale production of specialty chemicals for the entire BASF Corporation. After retirement from BASF, he is now a Research Professor at the Wayne State University where he teaches safety, risk analysis, and DOE.

Joe has over 30 publications and 10 US patents. The publications include the co-author of two books: (a) Chemical Process Safety, and (2) Health and Environmental Risk Analysis. He has been very active in AIChE and has served in many offices in that organization. He is currently Chair of the Undergraduate Education Committee (SACHE) of the Center for Chemical Process Safety and member of the Safety and Loss Prevention Committee. Dr. Louvar is also an Adjunct Professor at Wayne State University teaching courses in safety, risk analysis, and the statistical design of experiments.

Some of Joe's honors and awards are listed as follows: Chemical Engineer of the Year of the Detroit Section of AIChE in 1986, AIChE Fellow-1996, Exceptional Accomplishment Award at Wayne State University-1997, UMR Professional Engineering Degree-1997, and a Distinguished Academy of Chemical Engineering Award at Michigan Technological University in 1998. Joe and his wife Diane reside in Lincoln Park, Michigan. Joe was inducted into the Academy in 2000.
