Upon receiving his doctorate in 1959, Joe taught at Oklahoma State University as Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering. In 1961, he ventured to the University of Maryland in College Park where he taught as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor, before becoming Chairman of Chemical Engineering in 1967 and Provost of Math, Physical Sciences, & Engineering in 1973. Joe was Chancellor of the University of Missouri-Rolla from 1978 to 1985. Before becoming Professor of Engineering at Old Dominion University in Virginia, he served as their President from 1985-1989. Joe is a registered Professional Engineer; a member of the Missouri, Maryland, and Virginia Societies of Professional Engineers; author of Control of Air Pollution Sources; a member of the American Chemical Society; and past Chairman for Maryland Power Plant Sitting Committee. He is an Honorary Alumnus and a St. Pat Honorary Knight. Joe and his wife Louise joined the Order of the Golden Shillelagh in 1985. The Joseph and Louise Marchello Endowed Scholarship Fund has been established to help chemical engineering students. Joe was inducted into the Academy in 1997. Dr. Marchello passed away August 10, 1999. His wife Louise resides in Norfolk, Virginia.
