During 1950-1954, Jim worked as a Research Chemical Engineer at DuPont in Wilmington, DE. He moved from industry to academia in 1954 to become Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1957, Jim moved to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where he served as Dean of Engineering from 1964-1991 and is currently a Professor of Chemical Engineering. He is a member of several organizations including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Association of University Professors, American Chemical Society, National Society of Professional Engineers, Society of Plastics Engineers, Society of Rheology, and American Association for Engineering Education. Dr. McKelvey has been honored as an Elected Fellow of Society of Plastics Engineers and has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers, the Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Missouri-Rolla, and the Educator Award in Plastics Science and Engineering. He has also been awarded three U.S. Patents. Jim is a registered engineer in the states of Missouri and Maryland. He and his wife Judy joined the OGS in 1998 and reside in St. Louis, Missouri. Jim was inducted into the Academy in 1997.
