Joseph D. Smith has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with over 30 years’ experience in the Chemical and Petrochemical Industry.  Dr. Smith has published over 40 papers, has given more than 70 conference papers, and holds eight patents.  Dr. Smith has contributed two chapters to the John Zink Combustion Handbook and published one chapter in the Industrial Burner Handbook.  Dr. Smith was part of the design team to develop the Dow Chemical Clean coal technology (now owned by Chicago Bridge and Iron) and has established and led two startup companies that provide engineering services to the petrochemical and fossil power industries.  Dr. Smith has developed and applied comprehensive CFD models for reactive flow systems including pulverized-fuel combustion and gasification systems, process heaters, and gas flares.  Dr. Smith serves as an expert witness for Gas Flare Performance and Hydrocarbon Processing and is a certified Cause and Origin Fire Investigator and is certified by the Department of Homeland Security for determining Critical Infrastructure Risk.  Dr. Smith has worked for the Dow Chemical Company, Cabot Corporation, Koch Industries and most recently Idaho National Laboratory.  He has served on the faculties at Tennessee Technological University, University of Michigan, University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign, and University of Tulsa.  Currently Dr. Smith holds the Wayne and Gayle Laufer Endowed Energy Chair at Missouri University of Science and Technology where he also serves as Director of the Energy Research and Development Center and Executive Director of the Small Nuclear Modular Reactor Research and Development Consortium.  Dr. Smith is married to Eileen Smith and has five children (one engineer) and eleven grandchildren.
