Mailand was a member of the chemical engineering faculty at MSM-UMR for 22 years, of which he was Department Chair for 15 of those years. Mailand was the first Chairman of Chemical Engineering after its 1964 separation from Chemistry. Under his guidance, the department occupied new facilities in 1973. His leadership enhanced the quality of the chemical engineering curriculum and staff over the years. During that time, he touched the lives of many students, some of whom are in this Academy. Mailand intertwined his years of formal education, with years of working in industry and service in the U.S. Army Air Force, and starting family endeavors that undoubtedly gave him greater understanding of the challenges facing other graduate students. Mailand was well known for his dedication to his family as well as to his UMR students, faculty, and staff. His professional affiliations included membership in Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, AIChE, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, and the National Society of Professional Engineers. Mailand resides in Rolla, Missouri. Mailand was inducted into the Academy in 1996. Mailand passed away on June 2, 2008.
