Dr. André D. Taylor

Professor and Director of the Transformative Materials and Devices Laboratory at New York University

BS ChE'95, Missouri University of Science and Technology

Prof. André D. Taylor is a Full Professor and leads the Transformative Materials and Devices Laboratory (https://tmdlab.org/) in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at New York University. He specializes in the synthesis and integration of nanomaterials for advanced energy conversion and storage devices such as fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, and solar cells.

Dr. Taylor received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (1995), his M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (2000), and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan (2005).

Before joining NYU, Dr. Taylor was a tenured faculty member in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Yale University.

Dr. Taylor has delivered plenary and invited lectures at local, national, and international levels. He holds several patents and has published extensively in archival journals. His honors include the NSF CAREER Award and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). In 2015, he served as a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Associate Professor at MIT. In 2021, Dr. Taylor and colleagues launched the Center for Decarbonizing Chemical Manufacturing Using Sustainable Electrification (DC-MUSE) (https://www.dc-muse.org/), where he serves as Director. The Center’s mission is to catalyze the decarbonization of the chemical industry by developing electrified, sustainable manufacturing processes.

Prior to his academic career, Dr. Taylor gained industrial experience as a summer intern at General Motors’ Grey Iron Foundry in Saginaw, Michigan; at Monsanto’s world headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri; and at the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Quantico, Virginia. After completing his Ph.D., he worked at DuPont in the Engineering Polymers Division in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and later in the Intellectual Asset Management Group at DuPont’s Chestnut Run facility in Wilmington, Delaware.

While an undergraduate at Missouri S&T, Dr. Taylor was active in numerous organizations, including Omega Chi Epsilon and AIChE, serving as president of both in the same semester—a first for the department. He was also a member of the Air Force ROTC and the National Society of Black Engineers. A well-rounded student, he served as an RA for Quadrangle House D and was one of the leading scorers on their intramural soccer championship team. He also hosted a weekly radio show on KMNR. Notably, he was recognized as Theta Tau Omega’s Freshman of the Year for his academic excellence and leadership.

A Missouri native, Dr. Taylor was born in Kansas City and grew up in Sedalia, Missouri. He currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, with his two children, Jackson (16) and Arianna (15).
