After a short stint with Flintkote Corp., Jack began work in research at Socony Mobil Research Laboratories in 1951. He joined the faculty of the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1962.  In 1973-1977, he was Director of the Minority Engineering Program and also the Women in Engineering Program.  In 1977, he became Department Chair of Chemical Engineering at Ohio State, a position he held until 1994 when he was named the Helen C. Kurtz Professor.

He began his studies of turbulent drag reduction by polymers and fibers in the mid-1960's.  In recent years, he has focused on surfactant additives, emphasizing the effect of chemical structures of cationic, nonionic, and zwitterionic surfactant additives and their mixtures on drag reducing effectiveness and on the interrelationships among chemical structures, drag reduction effectiveness, surfactant microstructure and rheology.  He has authored over a hundred journal publications in these and related research areas. From 1969-1992, he and Gary Patterson and later Rex Reed organized a series of 13 International Symposia on Turbulence held at UMR.

A Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, he received the Hlavka medal of the Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences in 1992, the Japanese Government Research Award for Foreign Specialist in 2001 and was distinguished Visiting Professor, Mexican Academy of Sciences and the Mexico-USA Foundation for Science in 1999.  In 1994, he was named Outstanding Educator of the year by the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers.  He was Visiting Professor and American Chemical Society-Petroleum Research Fund International Fellow at the Technion (Israel) in 1968-1969 and Visiting Scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. in 1975-1976.  Jacques and his wife Linda reside in Columbus, Ohio and he was inducted into the Academy in 2007.
