In 1956, Charles started his career as an engineering trainee at Hannibal Plant Universal Atlas Cement Division of United States Steel Corporation. Charles continued with United States Steel for 16 years. While at United States Steel Corporation, Charles worked his way up to Chief Chemist and Inspector. In 1972, Charles went to work for Continental Cement Company as Supervisor of Operating. In October 1996, Charles retired from Continental Cement Company as Vice-President of Operations. Charles spent the last ten years with Continental Cement establishing a hazardous waste fuels usage program for the Hannibal Plant. This included the construction of a laboratory and development of testing protocol to meet Missouri DNR and Federal EPA standards.

Charles was member of the Board of Directors for the Missouri Mining Industry Council, a member of the CKRC (Cement Kiln Recycling Coalition) and a member of ASTM-C150. Charles was also involved in almost weekly discussions with the Federal EPA concerning the use of hazardous waste as a fuel for cement kilns. While at UMR, Charles was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Alpha Chi Sigma,Blue Key, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Charles and his wife Anita reside in Hannibal, Missouri. Charles was inducted into the Academy in 2002.
