Ernie began his career with Monsanto in St. Louis, Missouri as a process engineer. In 1986, he accepted a position  with Anheuser-Busch Companies as a project engineer. In 1990, Ernie was offered a role with Mallinckrodt, Inc. in St. Louis, Missouri as a Senior Project Engineer. He progressed through the positions of Production Supervisor, Process Owner and Operational Excellence Manager. Ernie became certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt & as a lean manufacturing expert while at Mallinckrodt/Tyco Healthcare. In 2006, he joined BJC Healthcare and is currently a performance improvement manager for the revenue cycle transformation initiative.

While Ernie was at the University of Missouri-Rolla, he was involved with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Student Council, Student Union Board, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Association of Black Students, and the National Society of Black Engineers. After graduation, Ernie joined the MSM-UMR Corporate Development Council and the Chancellor's African- American Recruitment and Retention Committee. He is currently a Vice-President of the MSM-UMR Alumni Association Board of Directors and a member of the Chemical & Biological Engineering Industrial Advisory Council. Ernie has also helped the University of Missouri-Rolla Admissions Department by being an ambassador, a public resource ambassador and a mentor volunteer. Ernie and his wife Angela are members of the Order of the Golden Shillelagh. They reside in St. Louis, Missouri and have 3 children (Tiffany, Jarret and Jordan). Ernie was inducted into the Academy in 2004.
