Jim spent ten years in management with the gas and pipeline divisions of Conoco, Inc. He left to become President of Buckeye Gas Products, later founded the Heritage Propane Corporation, now the fourth largest retail propane marketer in the United States. In June 1996, he took the company public, as Heritage Propane Partners L.P. Jim has served on the Board of Directors of the National Propane Gas Association for the past 25 years and is a past national president for the National Propane Gas Association. Jim has served on the Board of Directors of Tulsa National Bank, Golf Enterprises Inc., U.S. Fleet Services, the Tulsa Area United Way, Tulsa Area Boy Scouts, Tulsa YMCA, and is a past president of the Petroleum Club of Tulsa. Jim has been extremely active with the UMR Alumni Association and is currently President of the Association Board of Directors. The James E. and Donna C. Bertelsmeyer Endowed Scholarship Fund has been established to help students with their education needs. He also reestablished the Tulsa Alumni Section, served as a section officer and class coordinator, and received the Alumni Association Achievement Award in 1988. Jim and his wife Donna have been OGS members since 1990, and they reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jim was inducted into the Academy in 1996 and is a past president of the Academy.
