After finishing his degree at UMR in 1950, Paul pursued an MS in Chemical Engineering at the University of Montana at Bozeman. Paul's longtime career with Oak Ridge National Laboratory began after completion of his training at the School of Reactor Technology in 1952 and continued until his retirement in December of 1994. During his time at ORNL, Paul also took the time to complete a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1965. At ORNL, Dr. Haas held positions as Group Leader, Senior Development Staff Member, and Senior Research Engineer in the Chemical Technology Division. During his career, he has worked on the development of process flow sheets for fuel fabrication, uranium conversion processes, waste treatment processes, nuclear fuel cycles, isotope separation processes, and on solvent extraction equipment. Dr. Haas has also dealt with uranium and thorium chemistry, fused salt chemistry, electrolysis, and sol gel processes for ceramics and nuclear fuels.

Since retiring from the National Laboratory in 1994, Paul has also worked as a consultant for M4 Environmental L.P., where he has worked on new technology for the conversion of depleted UF6 for storage or disposal. Dr. Haas has twenty patents and over fifty papers and literature publications during his career. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a Member of the American Chemical Society. He and his wife Betty reside in Knoxville, Tennessee. Paul was inducted into the Academy in 2001.
