During a career, which spanned 43 years with Ethyl Corporation, Art served as Supervisor of Manufacturing and Technical Services, General Superintendent of Engineering Services, and Vice President of Corporate Planning before retiring in 1994. He was a Director of Albemarle Corporation (1994-1996), and he is a former consultant for Albemarle. Art has been a member of AIChE, past President of the Engineers Club of Richmond, and a past member of the Marine Science Development Council, which supports the William and Mary School of Marine Science. In the Richmond area, he has long been involved with the Science Museum of Virginia, most recently as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, a former member of the Richmond Symphony Foundation, and past President of the Science Museum of Virginia Foundation. An Arthur and Evelyn Helwig Endowed Scholarship Fund has been established to help chemical engineering students. He and his wife Evelyn have been members of OGS since 1996, and they reside in Richmond, Virginia. Art was inducted into the Academy in 1996 and is a past president of the Academy.
