Jim received the first Ph.D. awarded by the Chemical Engineering Department at MSM. While a student, he was an Atomic Energy Commission Nuclear Energy Technology Fellow and National Science Foundation Cooperative Fellow at MSM. He rose through the academic ranks to become Chairman of the Department, serving from 1979 to 1990. His research areas are electrochemistry and corrosion. In addition to his research, he is probably best known to thousands of UMR graduates for his excellent teaching style. Among his other professional affiliations, Jim is a member of AIChE. He is also active in the Rolla community, particularly in his church and in the local Rotary club. The Dr. James Johnson Scholarship Fund has been established to help chemical engineering students. Jim passed away on February 20, 2001. His wife Vera resides in Rolla, Missouri. Jim was inducted into the Academy in 1996.
