BS ChE 1992, University of Missouri-Rolla
MBA with a concentration in Finance 1999

As a loyal alumnus of Missouri S&T, a past member of the Chemical Engineering Industrial Advisory Council, and an active member of the Academy of Chemical Engineers, Phil Ling has invested in the future of the university for many years.  Through his diverse and distinguished career in the petrochemicals, oil and gas sectors, he has raised the university’s profile, championed the close alignment between industry and academia, and underscored the practical, commercial and industrial application of technical know-how and expertise.

Phil graduated from Missouri S&T in 1992 and joined Lyondell Petrochemicals as a process engineer at their Channelview, TX plant.  In 2001, Phil joined Shell.  While at Shell, Phil has worked in London, New Orleans and Houston.  Over a long and tenured career in the energy industry, Phil has held roles in process and production engineering, economics & scheduling, crude oil supply, business development, commodities trading, and mergers & acquisitions.  Phil joined Shell’s deal making organization in 2014, which has him leading and negotiating various acquisitions, divestments and partnerships.  In this capacity, Phil has supported or led complex transactions totaling over $5 billion in deal value delivery for Shell.

Phil received an MBA with a concentration in Finance in 1999 – this cemented his passion for utilizing his technical know-how and problem-solving skills in conjunction with his business/commercial acumen honed in business school – and has led him to his current deal making role at Shell, which he considers the perfect marriage of his undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Phil has generously supported the Chemical Engineering department phonathons, student organizations like AIChE and Omega Chi Epsilon, and the Alumni Annual Fund.  Phil has endowed a department scholarship honoring Dr. Oliver Sitton, in recognition of Dr. Sitton’s significant and meaningful influence and inspiration to him and scores of other students at Missouri S&T.

Phil calls Houston home – but is a proud alumni of the international student community at Missouri S&T, having grown up in Malaysia.  Rolla was his first port of call in the US, and the memories that Phil has of his first experiences in the US are indelibly and fondly tied to Missouri S&T and Rolla.
