Upon graduation from MSM, Jim was commissioned and spent five years in the US Naval Reserve - two and a half on active duty in the Pacific theater with an Amphibious Group. His Naval training was in technical radar, radar counter measures, and communications at Bowdoin College, MIT, and the Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC. After active duty, Jim spent a year working for Ralston Purina at their research lab in St. Louis when he decided to get a PhD. At Washington University in St. Louis, he had a teaching assistantship, a DuPont Fellowship, and worked summers at the Tretolite Co. as a chemist. Upon graduation in 1951, he worked for Shell Oil in Wood River, Illinois as a Research Chemist involved in free radical and surface chemistry as applied to petroleum product and process research. During this work, he spent time at the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies and a year at the Shell U.K. Thornton Research Centre. Jim was responsible for radiotracer research and radiation safety at the lab and refinery for many years. He co-authored a number of papers published in JACS and JPC and was granted few patents dealing with new oxidation inhibitors, rust inhibitors, and elastomer preservation compounds. His last 10 years at Shell were spent as Supervisor of Health and Environment and Radiation Safety at the Shell Development Westhollow Research Facility near Houston until his retirement in 1985. Jim was a member of ACS (50 yrs), AAAS (SSE), Sigma Xi, and the American Solar Energy Society. James died on June 23, 2001. His wife Pearl lives in Cypress, Texas. Jim was inducted into the Academy in 2000.
