Gary began his career with the University of Missouri-Rolla in February 1966. He started as an assistant professor and worked up through the academic ranks. During his first tenure at UMR, Gary spent a year at the Max Planck Institute in Goettingen, Germany under the auspices of the Humboldt Foundation award and was also a Smurfit-Alton visiting professor at the University of Dublin in Ireland. In 1984, Gary moved to the University of Arizona as Professor and Head of Chemical Engineering. In 1990, Gary was recruited back to the UMR as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Affairs for the School of Engineering. Gary returned to the Department of Chemical Engineering in 1996 and was made Professor Emeritus in 2000, however he continued to teach after retirement until May 2002.

Gary's industrial experience has been with the companies Proctor & Gamble, Columbia-Southern Chemical Company, Esso Research Laboratories, and Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. Gary has been an active participant in professional organizations including the American Institute of Chemical Engineering, the American Chemical Society, the National Society of Professional Engineers, Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Engineering Education, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Tau Beta Pi. He served on the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission for 5 years and has been an ABET program reviewer since 1989. He has supervised 25 MS thesis and 10 PhD dissertations. He has authored and co-authored over 80 publications. He has received 30 research awards and grants to support research, foreign travel, symposium organization, and education. He has consulted with 11 different companies, some for extended times. Gary and his wife Barbara reside in Rolla, Missouri. Gary was inducted into the Academy in 2002.
