Robert began his career with Haynes Satellite Division of Union Carbide Corporation where he was leader of a group that developed high performance materials for chemical and aerospace applications.  He has four patents for high temperature coatings.  In 1970, Robert accepted a position with Monsanto as a corrosion specialist and managed the Mechanical and Materials Engineering section, a group of technical specialists who served as in-house consultants throughout Monsanto.

Robert played a leadership role in the formation of the Materials Technology Institute of the Chemical Process Industries, Inc. (MTI).  He was one of five people who nurtured the concept into a living organization from 1975 to 1977.  They formed this unique organization to conduct cost-effective studies of interest to many companies.  He served on the Board of Directors from 1977 to 1991 and as Chairman from 1977 to 1979 and from 1986 to 1989.  He also is an MTI Fellow.

Robert has more than 30 publications and presentations related to corrosion control.  These include one book on materials selection for hydrocarbon and chemical plants.  He was president of the NACE International, The Corrosion Society, a life member of ASM International (formerly American Society of Materials) and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Robert and his wife Donna reside in Chesterfield, Missouri.  Robert was inducted into the Academy in 2009.
