In 1956, Dale joined the Monsanto Company as a Design Engineer, where he assisted senior engineers with new plant design and start up facilities. He also had a short stint with the US Army from August to December of 1956 working with the Critical Skills Program. Monsanto moved him to Arkansas, where he held the positions of Area Maintenance Engineer, Assistant Operating Supervisor, Technical Service Engineer in 1958, and Solids Area Supervisor from 1958-1966. From 1964 to 1974, he served as a Technical Production Supervisor and later as a Loss Prevention Specialist at the W. G. Krummrich Plant, in Sauget, Illinois. Dale then moved to Mallinckrodt, Inc. in St. Louis as the Corporate Manager of Health & Safety, in 1974. In 1983, he held the position as Director of Corporate Safety & Employee Health. In 1990, Mallinckrodt split into a chemical and a medical company. At this time, Dale assumed the position as Director of Safety & Employee Health in the new Mallinckrodt Specialty Chemicals Company. In 1993, he retired from Mallinckrodt to become a consultant in the area of safety, chemical safety, regulatory compliance, and chemical process safety.

Dale has several publications dealing with safety and loss prevention in the chemical industry. He was a Registered Certified Safety Professional and is a member of ASSE. He is a past member and Chair of the NAM Committee on Safety & Fire Protection, a past member of the CMA-Safety Programs Task Group, and a past Instructor of the National Safety Council's Safety Course on Chemical Safety. Dale and his wife Betty became members of OGS in 2001 and reside in Glen Carbon, Illinois. Dale was inducted into the Academy in 2000.
