Steve received his degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1974 and graduated from the University of Michigan's Executive MBA program for Global Leadership in 1991. Steve joined BP's (Amoco pre-merger) Exploration & Production (E&P) operations in Corpus Christi, Texas immediately upon graduating from UMR in 1974. From 1975 to 1988, Steve held positions of increasing responsibility in Engineering and Operations management in the E&P business, residing in Houston, Chicago, and Denver. In 1988, Steve was named Manager of Engineering for the global E&P business. In 1989, he was appointed to head the worldwide Procurement function. In 1991, Steve joined the Chemical Company as Vice President of Manufacturing & Technology for the global PTA and PX businesses. In 1992, he relocated to Hong Kong as Executive VP for the Asia-Pacific Region, with responsibilities for a variety of Chemical businesses and Asia Pacific Chemical operations. In 1994, Steve returned to the U.S. to help create BP's Worldwide Engineering & Construction organization, holding a leadership position in that organization. He went on to become the Technology Vice President for Engineering in the Chemicals business and became a member of BP's Group Technology Council, relocating to London, England. In late-2000, Steve returned to the E&P business as Technology Vice President for Projects and Engineering. He returned to Houston in late-2002.

Steve is a member of AIChE and the UK's Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is a former member of the Executive Board of AIChE's ECC. Steve currently resides in Houston with his wife and two sons. Steve was inducted into the Academy in 2003.
