Robert started his career with ExxonMobil Chemical Company after finishing his PhD in Organic Chemistry in 1967. Robert was the first to receive a PhD degree from the Chemistry Department at the University of Missouri-Rolla. Groups that Robert managed at ExxonMobil included Polypropylene Technology, High Performance Polymers Technology, Polymers Development and Ethylene Elastomers Technology. During his career, they were the first to commercialize metallocene catalyst technology for polymer production in 1991. Also in 1991, Robert won The Most Valuable Patent Award for technology used to produce specialty polypropylenes and other polymers. Robert holds 7 U.S. patents. He retired from ExxonMobil after 30 years of service.

Robert was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Alpha Chi Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi,the SPE, and the ACS. Robert is currently an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Jasper, Texas. Robert and his wife Janet reside in Hemphill, Texas. Robert was inducted into the Academy in 2002.
